One of the main selling points of a stucco exterior installed by a home improvement and attic insulation contractor is that it is virtually maintenance-free. But while it doesn’t require specialized maintenance, it will benefit from routine care, much like other parts of your home.
Stucco walls are ideally washed twice or three times a year to maintain its finish. Washing stucco can be done with either a garden hose or a pressure washer. A garden hose is ideal if you’re washing down minimal dirt and debris. If you encounter stubborn spots, you can use a brush with medium stiffness.
For the best clean with a pressure washer, you should be using equipment with a capacity of at least 1,500 psi. Make sure as well that you are wearing appropriate safety gear when using a pressure washer to prevent injury.
If you prefer it, you may also use commercial stucco cleansers from a stucco and painting contractor. Just make sure to follow label instructions.
Quick tip: Wet stucco walls starting from the bottom and working your way up to prevent staining, especially in traditional stucco finishes that have a tendency to absorb water.
Maintaining Stucco Color
Aside from regular cleaning that prevents dirt and debris accumulation, here are a few other things you can do to maintain the color of your stucco walls:
- Take advantage of landscaping to form a barrier between bare dirt and stucco walls
- Schedule repainting between 3 to 7 years for painted stucco walls
- Use fog coating to restore finishes on unpainted stucco walls
